How to Remove Mold From Walls and Ceilings
Small surface mold on firm, painted walls or ceilings (under about 10 square feet) can be cleaned with detergent and water. Mold in soft, stained or soaked drywall has to be cut out. In Florida, licensed remediation is required for mold-contaminated areas over 10 contiguous square feet.
Walls and ceilings share one material, drywall, so the same rules apply. What matters is how deep the mold is and how wet the drywall got.

Cleaning a small patch
Use the same steps as in our bathroom ceiling guide: fix moisture, wear an N95 respirator, goggles and gloves, mist lightly, scrub with detergent and water, wipe, dry fast and monitor. Do not paint over mold and do not dry-scrub.
Why drywall is different
Drywall's paper facing is porous and organic. Once mold roots into it, cleaning the surface leaves growth inside. That is why soaked or stained drywall is cut out, past the visible edge, inside a sealed, filtered work zone.
